The musician comes first!

Yesterday, as I was aimlessly wandering the internet checking out random YouTube videos, I stumbled across Dave Grohl's keynote speech from last year's South by Southwest festival.

For about forty-nine minutes or so I sat on my bed watching Dave talk about his relationship with music throughout the years. From the first time he heard rock music, to the time he got his first instrument, to his first concert and all the ups and downs that he's been through in-between, there was one theme that he reiterated constantly ...the musician comes first!

As I listened, I began to smile. The way he described the feeling you get when you get your first guitar, learn your first chord and then the feeling of accomplishment when you learn your first song.

...the musician comes first!

I know that feeling all too well. It's a great feeling. And looking back, I would've never have had the privilege to know it without some amazing parents!

R&B, soul, 70's rock and pop ...these were music staples in my house growing up. Family road trips, early morning car rides to school, Saturday afternoon guitar lessons, not to mention trips to weekday afternoon tutoring sessions for just about every subject in Catholic school are some of my earliest memories of being introduced to great artists like B.B. King, John Fogherty, Bill Withers, Freddie Mercury, George Harrison, Al Green, Richie Havens and so many others!

Even though so many years have come and gone since then, I haven't forgotten that the musician comes first. Sure, there have been times where I've been distracted briefly, but I've never really forgotten.
